Like all Vision Gran Turismo cars, it will be only drivable on a Playstation.
Audi has released a video teasing its e-tron Vision Gran Turismo race car. Though it is a car developed for Playstation's Gran Turismo racing simulator, it appears to have been inspired by the short-lived Audi R8 e-Tron.
Based on the side profile sketches and light signature shown in the video released this week, the car, despite its name, appears to have very little to do with the Audi e-tron GT teased last month. That image showed us a four-door sports sedan, likely built on the same platform as the Porsche Mission E 2+2.
Instead the e-tron Vision Gran Turismo seems to be based on the 2015 Audi R8 e-tron, which cost $1.1 million and was canceled a year after its introduction at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Audi claims that fewer than 100 were built, but the company has been evasive about the car's details.
The Vision Gran Turismo cars have been conceived as a way for car companies to create their sky's-the-limit dream machines in the virtual world. Automakers from Alpine to Volkswagen have participated, creating their ultimate brand representations for the detailed and realistic racing franchise. Perhaps, then, the Gran Turismo video game is the perfect platform for the R8 e-tron to live on. The car will be revealed April 9 and be available to "drive" for Gran Turismo players.
